Arrhov Frick Arkitektkontor was commissioned to build a small summer cottage on a limited plot. The rocky landscape lined with windswept pines and heather inspired a simple but inviting home. Viggsö is an island in the middle of the Stockholm Archipelago, with no roads or fixed links to the mainland. It was important that all the building’s components could be transported and moved around efficiently.
The house has been divided into three equal zones. First comes the entrance section with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, plus a loft for children and guests. This is followed by an airy living room with views on three sides. Then comes the third section, which is an equally large terrace. The terrace is covered with a semi-transparent roof that has the same corrugated profile as the rest of the roof. The interior floorspace measures just 40 square metres. All the wood has been left exposed, including on the ceilings.
The streamlined design of the building allows for a simple post and beam construction comprising 12 glulam posts mounted on concrete plinths. Striking cross-beams between the posts lend the house character. A glulam trimmer joist is mounted on the inside of the posts. All the wood is protected with SiO2 preservative treatment.
