Fjätervålen in northern Dalarna is set for a transformation into the Nordic region’s most sustainable mountain resort. Fjätervålen lies in a nature reserve, which makes climate issues important when planning the new destination. Carefully considered architecture and development is vital in ensuring that the mountain environment is kept as unaffected as possible. It is already clear that the focus is going to be on modern wooden architecture, with a plan for all the buildings to have wooden structural frames, and the initial sketches also show façades with a distinctly wooden feel. There will be a new hotel and resort centre, a restaurant, a shop and a spa, as well as housing, all with both lifts and ski trails on their doorstep, so the car can remain parked up for the whole of a stay.
“Wood is such an expressive material. In Fjätervålen, we have an opportunity to apply the expertise we’ve built up on a project that lies at the cutting edge, both architecturally and environmentally,” says Katja Hillström, architect at AIX Arkitekter.
